Context

The brief, and the surface.

An artisan collection of walnut tableware from a Mysuru workshop: bowls, scoops, spoons, trays, and coasters. Each piece sees daily food contact and washing — they needed an oil that was food-safe (DIN 53160 saliva and sweat resistance), washable, and that would deepen the walnut's natural colour without filming over the carved tactile surfaces. LEINOS Countertop Oil 280 was applied with a cloth pad in three thin coats per piece.

Each piece was oiled individually with focused attention on the food-contact surfaces (bowl interiors, spoon faces, plate tops). Three coats applied with 16-hour intervals; final cure 14 days before any piece touched food. End-grain on the bowls and spoon handles took the oil more heavily — wipe-back at 30 minutes prevented over-saturation.

Conditions on Site

Climate & Exposure
South Indian plateau indoor — climate-controlled, seasonal humidity
Limitations
  • Three-coat build per piece — repeated washing pulls oil out gradually
  • End-grain wipe-back at 30 minutes — bowls and spoon handles take oil more heavily than face-grain

Gallery

More from the site.

  • Walnut bowl interior close-up — food-safe satin oil finish with grain reading clearly.
  • Carved spoon detail — bowl-end and handle uniformly saturated with the food-safe oil.
  • Wooden plate showing warm brown tone with semi-matte sheen across the surface.
  • Coaster set — uniform finish across multiple smaller pieces, three-coat build per piece.
  • Carved scoop with handle — end-grain saturation matching the face-grain after wipe-back at 30 minutes.
  • Serving tray with raised edges — clean oil coverage across the corners and inner well.
  • Full collection laid out — uniform warm brown register across bowls, spoons, plates, and coasters.

Outcome

The result on site.

Hand-carved walnut tableware collection from Mysuru — LEINOS Countertop Oil 280 three-coat build delivers a food-safe DIN 53160 surface that washes without ungumming across bowls, spoons, plates, and coasters.

The walnut pieces display a rich, warm brown tone with excellent grain clarity and a semi-matte sheen. Bowl interiors and spoon faces wipe clean of food residue; the tableware washes without ungumming the oil layer.

Results vary by surface condition, climate exposure, application method, and ongoing maintenance.
