Mechanism & Use

How 280 countertop oil works.

Open-pore penetrating oil, tested for migration by a Lebensmittelchemikerin — safe under your child’s lunch plate, tough under your coffee mug.

01

Oil soaks into the grain

Penetrating natural oil travels into the wood’s open cells. The wood itself becomes the protection — no film on top, nothing to peel.

02

Pores stay open, breathing

Open-pore finish lets the wood respire. No plastic seal trapping moisture, no edge that cracks or chips with daily use.

03

Resin binds it tough

Natural resin cross-links the oil into the wood fibre. Stain-resistant to coffee, red wine, fruit juice — without sealing the surface.

04

WESSLING food-safe tested

Tested by Lebensmittelchemikerin in Altenberge. Migration tests in vegetable oil, acetic acid, ethanol; GC-MS screening. Reg. (EG) 1935/2004 + LFGB compliance.

Where It Lives

Where 280 lives

Solid-wood kitchen worktops

Premium modular kitchens — oak, teak, sheesham. Daily prep, spill-tolerant, knife-friendly.

Cutting + chopping boards

Solid-wood boards in daily food contact. Penetrating food-safe oil, no film to chip into food; wipe clean and re-oil as they wear. Food-contact compliant (EC 1935/2004 + LFGB) once fully cured.

Solid-wood furniture surfaces

Sideboards, console tops, open shelving. Open-pore, food-contact compliant (EC 1935/2004 + LFGB), spot-repairable.

Joint-family dining tables

Solid teak, sheesham, mango. Coffee mugs, hot bowls, fruit juice, kids’ meals.

Breakfast counters + open shelves

Open-pore finish for coffee + spice exposure. Wipe clean; re-oil any worn spot.

Children’s furniture

Cribs, high chairs, study desks. EN 71-3 migration class for surfaces kids touch.

Wooden toys + tactile play surfaces

Migration-tested under conditions a curious child’s mouth creates.

Worn or stained spots can be re-oiled with a thin coat — no sanding, no contractor, no kitchen downtime. After 7-day cure the oil is fully bound to the wood and inert in food contact. Step by Step

How to Apply

  1. Final-sand the worktop to 240 grit. Substrate must be dry (wood moisture < 14 %), solid, absorbent, clean, and free of resin and dust.

  2. Open and stir 280 thoroughly before and during use. Work at ambient and surface temperature above 15 °C.

Hand stirring LEINOS 280 with a wooden stick in an open 2.5L tin on a workshop bench
  3. Apply coat 1 evenly with cloth, brush, or pad. Let the oil penetrate, then wipe off any excess before it dries.

  4. Recoat after approx. 18–24 hours. Two coats minimum; a third may be applied on absorbent woods.

  5. Ventilate thoroughly during application and drying. Dispose of oil-soaked rags in a sealed metal container or under water.

Open window with airflow; oil-soaked rags submerged in a metal pail of water in the foreground
  6. Allow the full cure (approx. 7–10 days) before regular food contact. The surface is recoatable after 18–24 hours; the migration-tested cure develops over the first week to ten days.

  • Clean and free of resin, old finishes, dust, and grease.
  • Final-sand to 240 grit before the first coat.
  • Ambient and surface temperature above 15 °C.

Coats & Recoating

  • Minimum two coats. Stir thoroughly before each coat.
  • Recoatable after approx. 18–24 hours.
  • A third coat may be applied on absorbent woods.
  • Full cure approx. 7–10 days — allow this before regular food contact.

Cleaning & Storage

  • Clean tools immediately after use with LEINOS Brush Cleaner or white spirit.
  • Shelf life: at least 5 years in original sealed container. Store cool, dry, and tightly closed.

Substrate Fit

280 works on — and what it doesn’t.

Suitable

Recommended substrates

  • Solid-wood kitchen worktops (hardwood and softwood)
  • Dining tables, breakfast counters, open shelves
  • Solid-wood furniture surfaces — sideboards, console tops, shelving
  • Children’s furniture and wooden toys

Use With Care

Working safely with 280

  • Oil-soaked rags and application residues may spontaneously combust. Store in a sealed metal container or under water until disposal.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Wear nitrile gloves during application.
  • Avoid release to the environment. Aquatic Chronic 3 per SDS — do not allow oil to enter surface water or drains.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying.
  • Keep out of reach of children during application; cured surface is safe for kids’ contact after 7-day cure.

Full Declaration

Composition

Every ingredient declared on the label. The Trust Hub explains what each one does and the standards behind it.

  • Natural Drying Oils (Linseed · Tung · Castor)

Plant-derived drying oils — linseed (Leinöl), tung (wood) and castor — the carrier of LEINOS 280’s penetration. They soak into the wood’s cell structure and oxidatively polymerise with the substrate. The wood itself becomes the protective body — no separate film, nothing to peel.

  • Natural-Resin Ester

Natural-resin ester cross-links the oil into the cellulose matrix. Locks the oil in place under daily kitchen use without sealing the surface or forming a continuous film.

  • Carnauba Wax

Plant-derived hard wax named in the current leinos.de datasheet — adds surface hardness and a soft, low sheen to the cured oil.

  • Isoaliphatic Solvent (Isoparaffins)

Dearomatised isoaliphatic (isoparaffin) carrier — evaporates during cure, leaving the cured oil-resin matrix bound to the wood. VOC max 360 g/L, EU Category f. The solvent-free counterpart is the separate article LEINOS LF 283.

  • Driers

Driers (siccatives) accelerate the oxidative cure of the oil. After full cure (approx. 7–10 days) the oil is bound and migration-tested inert in food contact (WESSLING · EC 1935/2004 + LFGB).
