Turned Sapele Boxes, Matte & Satin Hardwax Oil in Shimla

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh3 photos

A pair of turned, lidded sapele boxes by @kathkanistudio in Shimla, finished in LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 — one box in matte, the other in satin. The same boxes, turned and prepped identically, with only the sheen changed, so the maker could see how matte and satin read on the ebonised endgrain lids.

The Brief

The brief, and the surface.

Surface
Turned solid sapele — two lidded endgrain boxes (around 75mm deep), with ebonised black endgrain lids
Climate & Exposure
Interior decorative tableware, Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) — indoor objects made for regular handling
On-site Notes
  • Open-pore hardwax oil protects the wood for daily handling and stays repairable by re-oiling, with no film to chip
  • The same oil in two sheens — matte and satin — so the finish reads differently on the ebonised endgrain without changing the prep

Two endgrain-turned sapele boxes with ebonised black lids, made and finished by @kathkanistudio and shared on their Instagram with LEINOS tagged. Both boxes were turned, hollowed and sanded the same way and prepped with the same ebonising solution; the one variable the maker left open was the finish. Both are sealed in LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 — an open-pore oil that soaks into the wood rather than sitting on it as a film — but one box is finished in the matte sheen and the other in satin, to compare how each catches light on the dark endgrain lids.

Turned boxes meant for regular handling need a finish that protects the wood without a plasticky build-up, which is where a hardwax oil suits them: 290 penetrates the sapele and cures to a hard-wearing, open-pore surface that keeps the grain and can be refreshed by re-oiling a worn spot rather than stripping a film. Offered in more than one sheen, the same oil also lets the maker set the look — matte for a flatter, more even reflection, satin for a touch more depth on the ebonised endgrain, where the top grain drinks in more finish and reads darker and more dramatic.

Outcome

The result on site.

A matched pair of turned sapele boxes finished in LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 — matte on one, satin on the other — an open-pore oil that protects the wood for daily handling while keeping its grain and letting the maker choose the sheen.

Two near-identical boxes that differ only in sheen: the matte box reads flat and even, the satin one a little deeper and more reflective on the dark endgrain lid. As an open-pore oil rather than a varnish, 290 leaves the sapele grain visible and the boxes repairable by re-oiling — finished for regular use, not sealed under a film.

Results vary by surface condition, climate exposure, application method, and ongoing maintenance.
