Live-edge walnut slab table top in Jaipur — LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 deepens the heartwood-to-sapwood colour variation.

Context

The brief, and the surface.

A wide slab of walnut with natural live edges, hand-built in a Jaipur workshop. The walnut already carried deep colour variation between heartwood and sapwood — the oil needed to deepen the natural pigmentation without flattening the variation. LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 was applied with a cloth pad in two thin coats.

Cloth-pad application controls how much oil the open walnut grain takes — brushing pushes too much oil into the deeper grain channels, which would over-saturate the heartwood. The team worked end-grain first, then face grain, both with consistent pad pressure.

Conditions on Site

Surface
Interior live-edge walnut slab — natural heartwood-to-sapwood colour variation
Climate & Exposure
Rajasthan desert indoor — climate-controlled, low humidity, hot summers
Limitations
  • Cloth-pad application required — brushing over-saturates the heartwood grain channels
  • Dining surface — recoat oil at 18-24 months under daily meal traffic

Gallery

More from the site.

  • Close-up of the walnut grain — near-black heartwood transitioning to rich mid-brown sapwood under the oil finish.
  • Live-edge profile detail showing the natural curve preserved under the oil seal.
  • Top-surface texture under direct lighting — lustrous brown-black with grain contrast clearly visible.

Outcome

The result on site.

Live-edge walnut table top in Jaipur — LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 deepens the natural colour variation between heartwood (near-black) and sapwood (mid-brown) without flattening the grain contrast.

The oil deepened the walnut's natural colour variation, producing a rich, lustrous brown-black surface — the heartwood reading nearly black and the sapwood reading rich mid-brown. The grain contrast holds clearly under direct lighting; the surface wipes clean of food spills.

Results vary by surface condition, climate exposure, application method, and ongoing maintenance.
