Traditional turned-baluster staircase in Mumbai — solid hardwood finished with LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 in warm golden-amber tone.

Context

The brief, and the surface.

A residential staircase with elaborately turned wooden balusters and matching handrail, set on solid hardwood treads. The piece needed an oil that would penetrate every curve of the lathe-turned profile without pooling in the bead-and-cove transitions. LEINOS Interior Hardwax Oil 290 was brushed onto the bare wood in two thin coats.

The team used a 25mm soft-bristle brush for the balusters — wide enough to cover the spindle face in one pass, narrow enough to follow the bead-and-cove without skipping. Hard-to-reach junctions at the rail base were cleaned up with a cloth before tack-free.

Conditions on Site

Surface
Interior solid hardwood staircase — turned balusters, handrail, hardwood treads
Climate & Exposure
Coastal Mumbai indoor — climate-controlled, seasonal humidity, salt-air loading
Limitations
  • Lathe-turned profile — brush size matched to bead-and-cove spacing for full coverage
  • Handrail high-touch surface — recoat at 18-24 months on the rail, every 3-5 years on the spindles

Gallery

More from the site.

  • Detail of a lathe-turned baluster spindle — bead-and-cove profile reading clearly under the oil's soft satin sheen.
  • Handrail close-up with hand-rubbed satin finish — high-touch surface protected by Hardwax Oil 290.
  • Stair tread and riser junction — uniform golden-amber tone with no pooling at the spindle base.
  • Wide view of the staircase under raking window light — lathe-turned profile clearly defined across the run.
