These are opaque covering shades. Screen chips only approximate the real matt chalk colour — the dried finish reads softer and more matt than a glossy screen, and the tone deepens slightly under a clear wax. Confirm the colour against a test patch on the actual piece before committing to a full coat.

Mechanism & Use

How LEINOS 637 Furniture Chalk Paint works.

Chalk paint grips almost any prepared interior surface with minimal prep and dries to a soft covering matt finish. 637 pairs that ease with two things decorative chalk paints often lack: it is wet-scrub washable to Class 3, and it stays vapour-open so the wood beneath still breathes. A mineral body — chalk, titanium dioxide, talc and calcite — bound with natural resins and non-yellowing safflower oil, solvent-free.

01

Covering matt in ten ready colours

Very good opacity per DIN EN 13300 — the chalk-and-titanium-dioxide mineral body covers old furniture colour in two coats and dries to a soft, velvety matt with a faint hand-brushed register. Ten ready shades; no on-site tinting.

02

Wet-scrub washable — Class 3

Tested wash-resistant to Class 3 (DIN/EN ISO 11998 + DIN EN 13300) — light everyday marks wipe off a cured surface, unlike raw limewash. For table tops and high-touch pieces, seal with 350 Wall Wax Finish for a harder-wearing, wipe-clean top.

03

Vapour-open — the piece still breathes

Open-pore once cured: water vapour passes through the film rather than being sealed behind an acrylic skin. The matt mineral surface catches raking light with a depth synthetic furniture paint cannot replicate.

04

Mineral body · natural oil-resin binder · solvent-free

Water, chalk, titanium dioxide, talc, calcite and natural resins, bound with non-yellowing safflower oil and beeswax soap and thickened with methylcellulose. The oil cures on contact with air — which is why the datasheet asks for good ventilation while it dries. Trace isothiazolinone preservatives keep the wet tin stable; disclosed on the datasheet, they may cause allergic reactions (full hazard data in the SDS). Solvent-free, VOC 1 g/l (EU Cat. a).

Where It Lives

Where 637 Lives

Vintage and shabby-chic furniture makeovers

The classic chalk-paint job — a tired sideboard, dresser, or set of chairs given a soft matt colour with minimal prep. Key the old finish, two covering coats, and the piece reads hand-finished rather than sprayed. Distress the edges back for a shabby-chic register, or leave it clean and matt for a contemporary one. Seal with 350 Wall Wax Finish where the piece will be handled daily.

Contemporary painted accent furniture

A single statement piece in a muted decorator shade — Pacific Blue, Savanna, or Stone Grey against a neutral room. The covering matt finish and faint brush register give the piece depth that a sprayed synthetic lacquer flattens out. Ten ready colours mean no on-site tinting and no colour-match guesswork.

Children’s bedroom furniture

Cots, toy chests, small wardrobes and bookshelves. 637 is tested to EN 71-3 (migration of certain elements), so the cured surface suits children’s furniture. The wet product carries the honest isothiazolinone preservative disclosure — paint in a ventilated space, let it through-dry, and the cured matt finish is what the child lives with. Wax-sealed tops wipe clean of small hands.

Interior wall paneling and decorative wood elements

Wainscoting, shaker paneling, built-in shelving, and decorative timber trims. The vapour-open matt finish suits interior wood that needs to breathe, and Class 3 washability means fingerprints and scuffs along a hallway panel wipe off. Two coats over sound, keyed timber.

Boutique retail, cafe, and studio fit-outs

Painted counters, display joinery, and feature furniture in small commercial interiors where a hand-finished matt colour sets the register. Solvent-free and low-VOC (1 g/l, EU Cat. a) for occupied fit-outs; wax-finish the working surfaces that take daily wear.

Upcycled flea-market and heirloom pieces

Salvaged wood, mixed old finishes, and honest wear. Chalk paint is forgiving on imperfect substrates — key, clean, and cover — and the ten muted shades let a mismatched set of finds read as one considered collection. Confirm the shade against a test patch on the actual timber first.

Step by Step

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the piece — the surface must be dry, clean, grease-free and dust-free. Key old varnish or paint with a fine abrasive so the chalk paint can grip, then wipe down with a tack cloth. Flaking or powdering old coatings must be stripped back to a sound surface. No separate primer is needed on sound, keyed furniture.

Indian craftsman lightly hand-sanding the flat drawer front of a bare wooden sideboard with a fine sanding block, pale wood dust and a folded tack cloth beside it
  2. Stir the tin thoroughly before use (leinos.de canon) — open the LEINOS Furniture Chalk Paint tin and stir the matt chalk paint until the colour reads uniform. Supplied ready to use; no dilution required. Chalk paint settles faster than synthetic emulsion, so stir again if it stands between coats.

  3. Apply the first coat evenly by brush or roller — spread in all directions and lay off in the grain direction. On a roller, finish with light strokes to even the stipple; on a brush, the faint visible brush direction is part of the hand-applied chalk register. Work at a room and surface temperature above 8 °C, with good ventilation.

Indian craftsman brushing the first coat of soft matt Pacific-blue chalk paint onto a wooden sideboard drawer front with a flat oval bristle brush in even overlapping strokes
  4. Let the first coat surface-dry — approximately 1 to 2 hours at 20 °C / 50% RH. The chalk film needs fresh air and a dry substrate to cure; ventilate well and keep humidity moderate. Longer in cool or humid weather. Do not force-dry with direct heat.

  5. Apply the second coat the same way once the first is touch-dry — at least two coats give full covering opacity; add a further coat for a deeper decorative register. Through-dry is approximately 12 hours before heavy handling or waxing. Clean tools immediately after use with water and a mild detergent.

Indian craftsman applying an even second coat of matt Pacific-blue chalk paint over the dried first coat on a wooden sideboard panel, deeper uniform opacity building
  6. Optional — for hard-wearing surfaces (table tops, desk tops, high-touch cabinet fronts), seal the cured chalk paint with LEINOS 350 Wall Wax Finish. Buff a thin clear coat into the surface with a soft cotton cloth for a wipe-clean, low-sheen, harder-wearing top. Not required for low-touch decorative pieces.

Substrate Fit

637 works on — and what it doesn’t.

Suitable

Recommended substrates

  • Interior furniture — softwood and hardwood (cabinets, dressers, tables, chairs)
  • Wall paneling and decorative timber trims
  • Prepared interior wood (keyed, clean, dust-free)
  • Sound, keyed existing coatings (old varnish or paint scuffed with a fine abrasive)
  • Children’s furniture (tested to EN 71-3, migration of certain elements — cured surface)

Honest Limits

Where to use a different product

  • Exterior surfaces and weather-exposed furniture — 637 is an interior decorative paint. Use the LEINOS exterior wood line.
  • Permanently wet or high-splash areas without a protective top — for surfaces that take daily wet wear, seal with LEINOS 350 Wall Wax Finish
  • Non-absorbent or glossy surfaces that have not been keyed — glazed tile, intact gloss lacquer, laminate. Sand and de-gloss to a sound, keyed surface first.
  • Flaking or powdering old coatings — strip back to a sound substrate; the chalk paint bonds to a sound surface, not to a failing one.

Use With Care

Working safely with 637

  • Store away from children. Keep the tin closed and out of reach when not actively in use.
  • Contains isothiazolinone preservatives (BIT + CIT/MIT) — may cause an allergic reaction. Avoid contact with eyes and skin; wash any splashes with plenty of water.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during application and the drying period.
  • Avoid release to the environment. Do not pour wet-paint residues to drains, soil, or watercourses.
  • Disposal code: EAK/EWC 08 01 20. Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available on request from LEINOS India for the full hazard register.

Coverage & Pack Sizes

Two coats per piece — sized for the job.

Coverage varies with substrate absorbency and the depth of colour you want. Bare or porous timber drinks more than a previously finished surface. At least two coats for full covering opacity; confirm exact consumption with a test patch per leinos.de. Also available as a 0.1 L colour tester to try a shade before you commit.

Full Declaration

Composition

Every ingredient declared on the label. The Trust Hub explains what each one does and the standards behind it.

  • Chalk (Calcium Carbonate)

The mineral body of the paint — provides the matt opacity and the chalky surface depth that gives chalk paint its name. Inert, REACH-compliant.

  • Titanium Dioxide

Mineral white pigment for opacity and covering power (1–10% per SDS). The cured film is not classified hazardous; standard handling applies to the wet product.

  • Talc + Calcite (Mineral Fillers)

Mineral fillers that build the covering matt body and the soft velvety surface. Inert and compatible with the natural-resin binder.

  • Natural Resins + Safflower Oil + Beeswax Soap

The binder per the leinos.de datasheet — natural resins with non-yellowing safflower oil (Safloröl) and beeswax soap, thickened with methylcellulose. The safflower oil cures oxidatively (it needs air, which is why good ventilation matters); safflower is used instead of linseed because it does not yellow, keeping the pale shades true. Solvent-free; no synthetic acrylic polymer film between the room and the wood.

  • Mineral Colour Pigments

Light-fast mineral and earth pigments give the ten ready shades their colour, held inside the chalk matrix as substance rather than suspended on a polymer skin.

  • Preservatives (Isothiazolinones)

In-can preservatives (BIT plus a CIT/MIT blend, trace amounts) keep the water-borne tin stable through shelf life. The datasheet discloses them by name — they may cause allergic reactions in sensitised individuals; full hazard data is in the SDS, supplied on request from LEINOS India. We disclose them in line with our full-ingredient pledge.
