VINTAGE WALL GROUND · ART. 631
LEINOS 631 — a transparent, tintable relief-building spatula for exclusive vintage wall finishes. Troweled over a coloured 660 base coat so its tint shows through, then heat-gun cracked into a layered, aged patina and sealed with 635 Vintage Finish. Breathable, silk-gloss, non-yellowing. Made in Germany by Reincke Naturfarben.
Decorative finish & Technique
A transparent relief ground-spatula, not an opaque putty. Troweled thin, cracked with a heat gun, tinted with 668 and sealed with 635 — a layered vintage patina that still lets the wall breathe.
Once dry, 631 is a nearly colourless transparent body. Troweled in varying thicknesses and worked immediately with a heat gun (~500 °C, circular motions), the surface shrinks into fine tension cracks — the craquelure relief that carries the vintage patina.
The binder is saponified shellac and natural-resin soap — water-based, plant- and lac-derived, non-yellowing — with a carnauba-beeswax body. The same LEINOS chemistry family as 632 Effect Spatula and 635 Vintage Finish.
Tint with 668 Pigment Concentrate; the transparent body lets tinted layers read through one another. After cracking and a further tinted pass, the wall is sanded back so the relief reveals the layered colours beneath.
The cured wall stays vapour-permeable — a decorative vintage statement that keeps the masonry exchanging moisture with the room instead of sealing it behind a synthetic film.
Where It Lives
Designer feature walls — Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi living rooms
The single statement wall in a premium apartment fit-out: a heat-cracked, multi-tone aged patina behind the sofa line or the dining console. The transparent layered build catches raking daylight and evening lamplight differently through the day.
Boutique hotels and hospitality
Reception backdrops, lounge walls and corridor end-walls in boutique stays — Goa, Jaipur, Coorg. The craquelure patina reads as hand-crafted heritage plasterwork, and the breathable build suits the older masonry shells common in heritage-conversion properties.
Restaurant, café and bar character walls
Aged-patina backdrops for hospitality interiors where the wall sets the mood. Tinted with 668 to a warm heritage palette and sealed with 635 so the surface takes daily wear in a public room.
Retail and brand fit-outs
Textured statement walls for premium retail, tintable to brand shades with 668 Pigment Concentrate. The layered relief holds track lighting as soft grazing light rather than the flat wash of a smooth painted wall.
Heritage-conversion interiors
Breathable decorative build over older masonry shells — the diffusion-open finish keeps the wall exchanging moisture instead of trapping it behind a film, while delivering an authentically aged surface.
Entry foyers and lift lobbies of premium residences
First-impression surfaces with high visual value and low touch traffic. The sealed silk-gloss patina takes ambient light from door glazing and lobby fixtures; 635 Vintage Finish protects where hands occasionally brush the wall.

The TDS is downloadable below. The SDS is supplied on request from LEINOS India with the full hazard register and the benzisothiazolinone preservative disclosure. Where you need a written specification packet — full ingredient declaration, VOC compliance line for an architect’s submittal, the 660 base-coat + 668 tinting compatibility statement, or a tinted-sample workflow for a designer-specified patina — it is available to designers and architects on request. Use Get Expert Advice above. 631 is a decorative wall ground, not a toy-safe or food-contact finish.

Lay the coloured base coat — 660 is a paint, not a primer: tint 660 Natural Resin Emulsion Paint with 668 to the background colour, roll it onto the wall, and let it dry. Its colour shows through the cracks of the relief above. Room and surface temperature above 15 °C. LEINOS recommends trying the technique on a coated sample board first to judge colour and pattern (TDS tip).

Tint the ground — stir approximately 668 Pigment Concentrate into 631 for the working colour. The product is ready to use; no thinning is needed. Pearlescent concentrates are only limitedly suitable for tinting 631.

Trowel the relief — apply the tinted 631 with a Japanese spatula in varying layer thicknesses, building the uneven, textured ground that will carry the crack pattern.

Heat-gun the cracks — immediately work the surface with a heat gun (~500 °C, ~400–500 l/min, circular motions) until tension cracks open into a craquelure relief across the compound.

Rework and sand — after approximately 24 hours, add further tinted 631 or pigment nuances for depth, then sand the surface back so the different colour layers stand out through the relief structure.

Seal with 635 — finish the sanded relief with LEINOS 635 Vintage Finish to seal the patina to a silk gloss and keep it dirt-repellent. Clean tools immediately after use with water and LEINOS 930 Plant Soap.

System & Substrates
Base colour first — 660 Natural Resin Emulsion Paint (a paint, not a primer), tinted with 668 to the background shade that shows through the cracks. Then 631: tint with 668, trowel the relief, heat-gun the cracks, rework and sand. Seal the finished patina with 635 Vintage Finish.

Shellac + Natural-Resin Soaps (Binder)
Saponified shellac and natural-resin soap — the water-based, non-yellowing film-forming binder pair. The same LEINOS chemistry family as 632 Effect Spatula and 635 Vintage Finish. Methylcellulose holds the compound in workable suspension.
Carnauba Wax + Beeswax
The polishable body — after cracking and sealing, the wax phase takes 635 Vintage Finish to a silk gloss. The same wax chemistry the LEINOS vintage system uses to seal an aged patina.
Mineral Body (Talc, Chalk, Clay)
Talc, calcium carbonate and clay form the transparent spatula body that troweling and the heat gun crack into relief. Tinted on site with 668 Pigment Concentrate. Inert, REACH-compliant minerals.
Preservative (Benzisothiazolinone)
Trace in-can preservative keeping the wet compound stable through shelf life. The TDS discloses 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one by name; it may cause allergic reactions in sensitised individuals. SDS available on request from LEINOS India.
