The pain — diagnosed

Where the layer on top of the wood — or the wall — actually fails.

In Mumbai by August, the new wooden deck has black streaks. By the next March, the lime-plastered facade has peeling sheets. By the third monsoon, the cedar shutters have cracked at every joint. The wood and the wall are sound — the failure is in the layer on top of them.

What the substrate endures

  • Monsoon

    8-12 weeks of horizontal rain at 85%+ humidity. Surface temperature drops; substrate stays warm. Vapour pressure pushes water under any sealed film.

  • Summer UV

    Index 9-11 for four months across most of India. Plastic films chalk, oxidise, and microcrack year after year.

  • Salt aerosol

    Coastal sites collect airborne salt week after week, year-round. Salt is hygroscopic; it draws moisture into every microcrack it finds.

  • Diurnal cycling

    Hill stations swing 35 °C by day to 8 °C at night. The substrate flexes; the film does not flex enough and lets go at the bond line.

Film-forming coatings — acrylic emulsion on walls, polyurethane on wood — seal the substrate from the room side. Vapour rising from below cannot escape upward through the film. It condenses behind the film. The bond fails from the inside. By the time the bubble or the crack appears, the wood or the wall has already absorbed weeks of trapped water.

The cycle

bubble → scrape → repaint → bubble. In the worst monsoon zones, a repaint every season or two.

Penetration, not film

LEINOS 150, 223, and 236 are linseed-oil-based — they soak into the wood pores and cure inside the wood, not on top of it. The 260 wood varnish stays open-pore and vapour-permeable, so the wood releases moisture instead of trapping it. Either way nothing seals the surface: water vapour can move back out instead of being held behind a sealed film, and the wood underneath stays sound for years.

Open-pored mineral system

The LEINOS silicate facade paints — ProfiSol 612 and UniverSil 614 — stay open-pored after curing: vapour- and CO₂-permeable, sd ≈ 0.01 for 612 per TDS. Monsoon vapour passes through the mineral coat instead of being blocked by a sealed film. The bond line never gets wet from behind.

Silicification, not adhesion

The water-glass binder in ProfiSol 612 and UniverSil 614 silicifies into the mineral substrate — the colour coat and the wall become one mineral layer, with no bond line to fail. 614 even re-mineralises firmly-adhering old synthetic coats. A silicate facade ages by extremely slow, even chalking — a material-typical property of mineral paint — instead of peeling in sheets.

How LEINOS answers this

Indian outdoor surfaces lose to weather not because the wood or wall is wrong — they lose because the coating is wrong. Film-forming finishes trap monsoon moisture against the substrate. The film cracks. Water sits underneath. The wood greys. The wall bubbles. LEINOS linseed-based exterior wood finishes (150 impregnation primer, 223 teak oil, 236 terrace wood oil, and the open-pore 260 wood varnish) penetrate or stay open-pore instead of sealing. Moisture passes through. Salt and UV degrade the top layer, but the wood stays sound. Refresh by re-oiling the same surface — no sanding, no peeling. For exterior facades, the LEINOS silicate systems — ProfiSol 612 on mineral render, UniverSil 614 over firmly-adhering old synthetic coats, with 622 mineral primer where absorbency needs evening — silicify into the substrate instead of filming over it. The wall stays vapour- and CO₂-permeable (sd ≈ 0.01 for 612, per TDS): monsoon vapour keeps moving out rather than sitting behind a sealed film, and the mineral colour holds at the highest stability class, A1.

    Prepare the substrate

    For wood: sand to bare timber, brush off dust, allow to reach moisture content of 15% or below (per TDS). For facades: remove loose and flaking coatings; firmly-adhering old synthetic coats can stay — UniverSil 614 is formulated to re-mineralise them. Prime chalking or very absorbent mineral surfaces with 622.

    Apply the base coat

    Wood: prime absorbent timber with a generous coat of 150 impregnation primer; after about 20 minutes redistribute any glossy excess so the oil sits in the grain, not on the surface, then dry 16–24 hours. Walls: apply 622 mineral primer with a brush, working into the substrate; recoatable after about 12 hours (per TDS).

    Build the system

    Wood: two coats of 223 teak oil or 236 terrace wood oil, recoating after 16–24 hours; the 260 wood varnish takes 2–3 thin coats, with the third recommended on sun-facing elevations. Walls: at least two thin coats of 612 or 614 silicate paint in a cross-pattern, allowing at least 12 hours between coats; protect fresh coats from rain (per TDS).

    First-year care

    Wood: inspect after one monsoon; spot-refresh any sun-bleached or salt-exposed zones with a single thin coat over a cleaned surface. Walls: a silicate facade ages by slow, even chalking rather than peeling — rinse off dirt after the monsoon and leave the mineral coat to weather honestly.

What fails

Each repaint adds another sealing film on top of the last. Trapped vapour lifts the whole stack; the thicker the build-up, the bigger the sheets that peel. The wall never gets to dry out.

  • Will LEINOS oils protect teak from Mumbai monsoon for 3+ years?

    Yes — as a maintained system. LEINOS 223 teak oil or 236 terrace wood oil penetrates the timber and protects it through monsoon cycles; plan a maintenance recoat typically every 12–24 months depending on sun and rain exposure (per TDS). Softwoods need refreshing more often than dense hardwoods like teak. The refresh is a single thin coat over a cleaned surface — no sanding, no stripping; on greyed teak, prep with the 940 greying remover first.

  • Can I use the same product system for both wooden and lime-plastered facades?

    No — wood and mineral substrates need different chemistry. Wood takes penetrating linseed oils (223, 236). Facades take the silicate system — 622 mineral primer where absorbency needs evening, then ProfiSol 612 on mineral render or UniverSil 614 over a firmly-adhering old synthetic coat. They share a philosophy (breathable, no sealed film, naturally weathered) but the binder is different.

  • Can I use the 665 lime paint on exterior facades?

    No — 665 is an interior lime paint (per its TDS). For facades, LEINOS uses silicate chemistry: ProfiSol 612 silicifies into mineral render, and UniverSil 614 re-mineralises walls that already carry a firmly-adhering old synthetic coat. Both stay vapour- and CO₂-permeable, hold colour at the highest stability class A1 (BFS 26), and cure alkaline (pH ≈ 11), which by itself leaves mould and algae little foothold; 614 additionally carries a film-protection preservative, disclosed on its datasheet.
