Exterior Wood

Every outdoor wood surface in an Indian home or commercial property — a teak compound gate at a Bangalore villa, a cedar shingle facade in Goa, a sheesham pergola beam in a Mumbai garden, a forest-green cantonment-park bench in old Delhi, a planter box on a Chennai terrace — sees monsoon RH 80–95% from June through September, intense UV across nine months of the year, and (on the coast) salt-air that multiplies UV degradation by 30–50%. The finishes documented for that reality are the LEINOS exterior wood set: Impregnation Wood Primer 150, Teak Oil 223 (tropical hardwood), Terrace Wood Oil 236 (softwood + mixed species), Premium Wood Varnish 260 (pigmented stain), Wax Varnish 600 (low-VOC water-based), and Weatherproof Paints 850/855 (opaque envelope colour).

Step by Step

How to Apply

  1. Surface preparation

Ensure wood is dry, clean, grease-free, dust-free, and absorbent. Remove old lacquer or opaque paint coatings completely. For greyed wood, sand back to healthy wood or pretreat with Anti-Greying Fluid 940. Pressure-treated wood must weather 1–2 months before treatment. Remove salt bloom if present.

  2. Apply primer (optional but recommended)

Apply Impregnation Primer 150 undiluted and generously by brush, roller, or spray. After approximately 20 minutes, redistribute any glossy excess with a brush. Allow 16–24 hours drying at 20°C and 50–55% humidity before overcoating. Primer provides blue stain protection and strengthens the wood.

  3. Apply first coat of exterior oil

Apply Teak Oil 223 or Terrace Wood Oil 236 thinly and evenly by brush. Avoid puddles and excess material. For furniture, work all surfaces including undersides, joints, and end grain. Temperature must be above 10°C. Ensure adequate ventilation during drying.

  4. Drying period

Teak Oil 223: dry to touch 6–8 hours, recoatable after 16–24 hours. Terrace Wood Oil 236: dry 6–8 hours, recoatable after 16–24 hours. Protect freshly oiled furniture from rain during drying.

  5. Apply second coat

Apply a second coat of the same oil following the same method. Two coats are standard for exterior furniture. No sanding required between coats for Teak Oil 223. Allow full drying before use or applying optional topcoat.

  6. Optional topcoat for enhanced protection

For maximum durability or decorative colour: apply Premium Wood Varnish 260 (requires Primer 150, min. 2 coats, 16–24h between coats) or Weatherproof Paint 850 (requires Primer 150, 2 coats, dust-dry 12h, recoat 24h). Wax Varnish 600 and Weatherproof Paint 855 can be applied directly (min. 2 coats).

System Composition

  • Optional: Impregnation Primer 150 (blue stain protection, bonding bridge)
  • Base: Exterior oil (Teak Oil 223 or Terrace Wood Oil 236) — 2 coats
  • Optional: Decorative topcoat (Wood Varnish 260, Wax Varnish 600, or Weatherproof Paint 850/855)

Why It Works

  • Teak Oil 223 penetrates deeply into the wood fibres without forming a surface film, maintaining natural wood elasticity and preventing drying and cracking.
  • Impregnation Primer 150 contains IPBC biocide for film protection against blue stain fungus — a common cause of discolouration in outdoor wood.
  • Multi-layer systems provide redundancy: even if the topcoat weathers, the primed and oiled wood substrate remains protected.

Pick the Right Build

Which build fits your surface?

Natural oil finish (garden furniture, benches)

For a natural, transparent wood appearance → Primer 150 (optional) + Teak Oil 223 in 2 coats. Teak Oil is especially suited for tropical hardwoods (teak, bangkirai) and softwood garden furniture. No sanding needed for annual maintenance recoats.

Primer 150 + Teak Oil 223 — 2 coats

Coloured decorative finish (chairs, tables)

For coloured stain protection → Primer 150 + Premium Wood Varnish 260 in 2+ coats. Available in 10+ colours with fungicide protection. Best for furniture where a decorative colour is desired while maintaining visible grain.

Primer 150 + Wood Varnish 260 — 2+ coats

Opaque weatherproof coating (heavy exposure)

For full-coverage colour protection → Primer 150 + Weatherproof Paint 850 (oil-based, semi-gloss, 9 colours) or 855 (water-based, matte, solvent-free). Best for furniture in exposed locations with maximum weather resistance.

Primer 150 + Weatherproof Paint 850/855 — 2 coats

Low-VOC decorative finish

For eco-conscious application → Wax Varnish 600 (VOC only 1 g/l), tintable with Pigment Concentrate 668. Water-based, tool cleanup with water. 2 coats minimum. Best for furniture where low environmental impact is prioritised.

Wax Varnish 600 — 2+ coats

What to Expect

  • Exterior furniture finishes require periodic maintenance — typically every 1–3 years depending on exposure, orientation, and climate.
  • South-facing and horizontally exposed surfaces weather faster than sheltered or vertical surfaces.
  • Teak Oil 223 and Terrace Wood Oil 236 can be recoated without sanding — simply clean the surface and apply a fresh coat.
  • Opaque topcoats (850, 855) require more extensive preparation if renovation is needed, as damaged film must be sanded or stripped.

What to Avoid

  • Impregnation Primer 150 contains biocide (IPBC) — for exterior use only, do not use indoors.
  • Premium Wood Varnish 260 and Weatherproof Paint 850 require Primer 150 before application.
  • Wax Varnish 600 is described in TDS for interior ceiling/wall covers and furniture — confirm exterior suitability for the specific application.
  • Wood Varnish 260 is not suitable for horizontal surfaces exposed to standing water (use Terrace Oil 236 for decking).
  • Do not apply any product below the minimum temperature: 10°C for oils (223, 236, 600, 855), 15°C for primer and varnish (150, 260, 850).

Scope & Limits

Where this system applies.

This solution covers ALL exterior wood applications across the LEINOS set: walkable terrace decking and boardwalks, garden furniture (tables, chairs, benches, planters), architectural envelope timber (cedar shingle cladding, weatherboard cladding, teak compound gates, garden gates, sheesham pergola beams, trellis arbours, picket and panel fences), and exterior joinery (window frames, door frames, shutters).

Requirements

  • Before any compatible products can be reviewed at the umbrella level, the following must be confirmed:
  • Solid wood substrate — teak, Burma teak, sheesham, bangkirai, mango, sal, cedar, eucalyptus, or similar absorbent species (no composite WPC, no plastic-look "rattan", no uPVC fence panel, no aluminium-frame gate)
  • Direct weather exposure — open to monsoon rain, intense UV, and seasonal temperature swing (covered verandas with no rain reach are interior-furniture register, not exterior)
  • Wood moisture content below 16% before treatment — measure with a pin meter on the underside; south-facing surfaces may need 1–2 weeks of drying after monsoon
  • Bare wood or wood stripped back to absorbent fibre — no factory PU, no alkyd paint film, no melamine residue (the LEINOS oil and paint set only bonds to bare wood)
  • Surface prepared to P80–P120 along the grain and dust removed; wood species identified before product choice — the 223-vs-236 decision drives the base oil for every tab

Not compatible with

  • This umbrella does not apply to:
  • Composite WPC (wood-plastic composite) garden decking and cladding, plastic-look synthetic "rattan" furniture, uPVC fence panels, aluminium-frame gates with non-wood infill — the LEINOS oil and paint set bonds to solid wood fibre only; engineered composites and synthetic siding stay sealed and reject penetration
  • Interior-only finishes (Hard Oil 240, Hardwax Oil 290, Hard Oil Clear 241, Hard Oil Universal 259) used on exterior surfaces — interior oils carry no UV stabilisers and yellow within 6 months under Indian outdoor sun
  • Mineral and masonry exterior surfaces (limewash plaster cladding, silicate-painted facades, stone garden walls, terrazzo benches, granite tables, IPS terrace floors) — wrong substrate class entirely; route to Exterior Walls or Exterior Mineral Façades solutions
  • Factory-finished or pre-sealed exterior wood (modern UV-cured polyurethane teak deck boards, varnished window frames from joinery shops, sealed PU compound gates) without full sand-back to bare wood — the oil and paint set will not penetrate or bond through residual film
